Every year, on 28th February of every year, India celebrates the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ discovered by C. V. Raman in India in 1928. His discovery was the first achievement India made in science which earned him a Nobel prize in Physics in 1930 and thus put India on the global scientific map. Since then India unites the laymen, the science and technology, and the government to acknowledge the importance of science in our lives and encourages young learning minds to develop their interests and intelligence in science and technology.
About the Day
The concept of celebrating 28th February as the National Science Day was first proposed by the ‘National Council for Science and Technology Communication’. Since 1986, the day has been celebrated in schools, colleges and research institutions to celebrate the Indian strengths in science. The Indian innovation and consequent discovery of C. V. Raman is celebrated on 28th February
Kinds of Discovery made
This Raman Effect is the change in wavelength of light which occurs when light is scattered by a medium. Basically, it is the explanation of how the interaction of intensity of light differs with the particles of the medium. This in turn led to the discovery of Raman Spectroscopy in chemistry, medicine, material engineering and forensics. This simple principle is still the base of major research laboratories
Significance of the Day
Scientific spirit needs to be increased as it:
-
Unites the students, the Researchers and the General Public
-
Advices them to develop a Scientific Outlook of Life
-
Urges Inventiveness and Creativeness
-
Puts forward Recognition to those who have directly Contributed to Science
Our development depends on our inventive and discovering ability and not just copying other‘s credit. We are advancing in space technology, medicine, digital technology, renewable energy and environment as a result of science
How the Day is celebrated
The day is being celebrated with:
-
Science Exhibitions,Rewards and Competitions
-
Contests,Seminars and Lectures
-
Visits to Laboratories
-
Awards and Felicitation programs
The institutions such as Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and various top universities organize courses and seminar to increase the awareness of the general masses about their success stories
FAQs
1. When National Science Day is Celebrated?
It is celebrated on 28th February every year.
2. Why is National Science Day celebrated ?
In honor of the memory of C.V. Rajasekhara and the work done in connection with the discovery of the Raman Effect.
3. What is the Raman Effect?
It‘s the change in wavelength that occurs when the incident light goes through a medium and hits a sample.
4. Who declared National Science Day?
The below resolution to be an introduction for celebration was declared by the NCSTC(National council for science and technology communication ) in 1986.
Conclusion
We should celebrate India‘s contributions to science so that the past excellence achieved by Indian scientists is passed on to the coming generations. We should be proud of the recognition earned through the discovery of C.V. Raman in years back, still so well held onto. We should inspire our young children to experiment and discover & to learn and understand. That‘s the mantra. Cheers to future scientists!
