The internet is like the pandora’s box it is a big and bottomless pit of information,data,graphics and much more that has no end to it. The discovery of internet has made our lives easier with the magic of obtaining information just at the tip of our fingers, often it is very easy to fall into the pit of the dark side of the web. Surveys says that one in three internet users is a child below the age of 18 making them vulnerable to be the targets of abuse and exploitation by a cyber-predator.
Every year on the 7th of February Safer Internet Day is commemorated with a view of ensuring a safe and secure internet experience for all users. This day is said to be observed in approximately 15 nations throughout the world with the theme “Together for a Better Internet”.
HISTORY OF THIS DAY
Safer internet day was established under the European Union’s policy that advocates the issue of internet safety for kids. First implemented in the year 2004 the objective behind the day was “better internet for kids". The intention of this day since has been to increase the supply of high quality, suitable content that can raise awareness and empower children and the young generation against unhealthy manipulation and exploitation.

Each year this day attempts to inculcate awareness about the rising cyber crimes rates like cyber bullying, identity theft, banking fraud, hacking etc. The repercussions are very extreme they affect both individuals and business.
Children and young people are increasingly becoming part of the digital world with increased access to web platforms they are exposed to inappropriate and unsuitable content which is bad for their age. It is through this day we shed light on this topic and make the internet a safer and secure place for kids. The theme for this year’s Safer Internet Day is “Together for a Better Internet”. Over the last 19 years this day has has overcome many milestones in terms of online safety.
